Catherine Marie Boyer

Bay Area native Cathy Boyer was drawing and painting in childhood and began instruction in oil painting at thirteen. After college, Cathy was employed in graphic design, while keeping up with drawing and painting on her own time. Thankfully, the timing of the dot.com bust in 2001 presented a window to study further.
It was the exposure to the Henche method during this time that changed her approach to color. This method, also referred to as a ‘colorist school’ emerged out of the Cape Cod School in Providence, Massachusetts started by William Merritt Chase and continued by Charles Hawthorne and later Henry Henche.
Like the California Impressionists of the 40’s, Cathy seeks to capture the beauty, mood and nuance of the California landscape from land to sea." Capturing the changeable light conditions that transform a view from ordinary one moment to extraordinary the next is what intrigues me. I seek to capture these rarer moments in time and share them.”

About process: “Nature presents the raw material, a particular contrast in color and design. I endeavor to develop a painting balancing design, shape, edges, value and temperature. The process, is very mental, yet intuitive. I strive to keep the work vital, knowing when to stop is key.”

Cathy enjoys painting the Central Coast, San Francisco Bay Area coastline and Marin estuaries, Her work is exhibited at William Lester Gallery.
