"It
is my intention to create paintings that spark memories and feelings of things
and times we have seen before, rather than a depiction of life as it is. My
paintings are about creating mood with color and texture and less about recognizable
objects. Each old barn, hay stack, or an abandoned fishing boat, captures a
mood rather than the real thing."

"
Most of my subject matter is derived from the varied landscape of the Sonoma
Valley where I live. Like the Impressionist, I paint in the field. The land
has always triggered a deep and special place in my heart, stemming from my
growing-up years on a dairy farm in rural Minnesota. The light and atmosphere
of the early morning and evening were a major part of my past when I would
help my father with the milking chores."

"Oil
paint is the media I use the most. I like to apply it in juicy gobs, mix
colors directly on the canvas, that way it remains fresh and vibrant in
contrast to the serene subject matter. The French Impressionists are a primary
source for my work. The allowed us to see the individual brush strokes that
created that beautiful illusion of light and texture.
I
also have had a long and profound appreciation for the Abstract
Expressionists. They were able to conjure strong emotional responses through
the use of color and texture leaving the subject matter secondary."
