Steven Markoff
lives in a barn/studio on a farm in Marshall, California that raises organic
cattle and sheep above Tomales Bay which is between Point Reyes and Bodega Bay,
centrally located to so much beautiful country. He works entirely on site,
mostly in gouache or opaque watercolor. He works in a direct and reverential
way, taking his inspiration from nature. Now familiar to the seasons and the
colors they bring, he feels lucky to find continual interest and revelation in
the area’s unique landscape.
Steven was born
in Brooklyn in 1947. His pursuit of painting began early. As a child, he
attended the Brooklyn Museum Art School. At 16 he was given a lifetime
membership to the Art Student's League, studying with Thomas Fogarty and Ernest

member of the California Art Club and has exhibited widely, including at the
Napa Valley Museum Plein Air Biennial, 2003 and 2007 and the Exhibit at Mission
